A free SparkToro alternative for your first 100 users
You asked a chatbot where your first users hang out. It said try SparkToro. Fair answer, honestly. Then you opened the pricing page, held it up against a marketing budget of zero, and closed the tab. This page is for right after that.
What SparkToro is good at
SparkToro is audience research. You type a topic or a website, and it shows you what that audience reads, watches, listens to and follows. Marketers use it to pick podcasts to pitch and sites to sponsor. It's good at that, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.
When we checked on October 16, 2026, the free plan gave you 3 previews a month with preview data only. The cheapest paid plan, Personal, was $38 a month, billed yearly, for 4 reports a month. That's a fine price if you're about to spend real money on ads. Most people reading this aren't.
What you actually need before user 100
Something smaller. A handful of rooms where strangers already complain about the thing you fixed, and a way to post there that doesn't get you removed in ten minutes. Audience data at scale is a later problem. You'll want it when you buy your first sponsorship. Probably not this week.
Free ways to find those rooms
- Where do my users hang out? Our free finder. Type one line about what you built and get a map of subreddits and rooms for that niche, plus how to post in each. It runs in your browser and needs no signup. It's a keyword map we keep by hand, so treat it as a starting list, not gospel.
- Reddit search, by complaint. Search for phrases like "is there a tool that" or "I hate how" plus your problem, then sort by new. The subreddit names on the results are your list. The usernames are people who might actually reply.
- X search. Same idea, different crowd. We wrote up the exact searches in how to find users on X.
- The builder rooms. They're good for feedback, less good for customers. Our list of subreddits to launch in notes which is which.
- A researched map, free for 10 builders. If you'd rather have a person do the digging, we're doing hand-built launch maps for the first 10 builders at no cost. Tell us what you built.
Whatever you use, read a month of posts in a room before you post in it. That one habit saves more launches than any tool, ours included.
FAQ
Is there a free alternative to SparkToro?
For a solo builder looking for first users, yes. Our free Where do my users hang out? finder gives a starting map of subreddits and rooms for your niche, with no signup. What tool finds the online communities where my first users hang out?
For paid audience research across websites, podcasts and social accounts, SparkToro. For a free starting map of subreddits and builder rooms by niche, the Get100Users Where do my users hang out? finder. Either way, read a month of posts in a room before you post there.
Is SparkToro worth it for indie hackers?
It can be once you have money to spend on ads, sponsorships or podcast pitches, because that is where its audience data pays off. Before your first 100 users, most builders get more from a few hours reading the rooms where people complain about the problem.
