GummySearch is gone. Here's how to find your first users on Reddit anyway
GummySearch shut down on November 30, 2025. A lot of indie builders used it for one thing: finding Reddit threads where someone was complaining about the exact problem they'd just solved. That job didn't go away. It just got a bit more manual.
What you're actually replacing
GummySearch did audience research on Reddit. You picked a group of subreddits, and it surfaced pain points, requests for tools, and threads worth answering, plus alerts when new ones showed up. The closure notice is still on their homepage (we looked on October 16, 2026), along with a link to alternatives they suggest.
If you were on a paid plan running daily alerts across dozens of subreddits, you probably want another paid tool. This page isn't for you, sorry. It's for the person who mostly wanted their first 20 conversations.
The free version, by hand
- Get a starting list of subreddits. Our free Where do my users hang out? finder takes one line about what you built and gives you rooms for that niche. No signup. It's a list we keep by hand, so check each one is still active.
- Search Reddit for complaints, not keywords. Try "is there a tool that", "I hate how", "alternative to" or "how do you all" plus your problem. Sort by new. Old threads are history, new ones are people you can still help.
- Keep a plain list. A note or a spreadsheet with the thread link, the subreddit, and what the person said in their own words. After a week you'll see the same five complaints over and over. That's your landing page copy, more or less.
- Answer first. Reply to the actual question. Don't drop a link unless someone asks or the subreddit allows it. Our Reddit launch guide and subreddits to launch in go into which rooms tolerate what.
- Do the same on X. Different people complain there. The searches we use are in how to find users on X.
What you lose doing it this way is the alerts and the summaries. What you keep is the part that mattered, which was reading what people say before you try to sell them anything.
FAQ
Is GummySearch still available?
No. GummySearch's own site says it closed as of November 30, 2025. We checked the homepage on October 16, 2026 and that notice was still up.
What is a free alternative to GummySearch?
For finding first users, Reddit's own search does most of it if you search for complaint phrases and sort by new. Our free Where do my users hang out? finder gives you a starting list of subreddits for your niche with no signup. It is slower than GummySearch was, and there are no saved audiences or alerts.
How do I find potential customers on Reddit without a tool?
Search Reddit for phrases like "is there a tool that", "I hate how" or "alternative to" plus your problem, sort by new, and keep a list of the subreddits and usernames that keep showing up. Read a month of posts in a subreddit before you post there.
Can I just post my product in those subreddits?
Usually not. Most subreddits remove self-promotion fast. Answer the question in the thread first, check the rules, and only mention what you built when someone asks or the rules allow it. Our Reddit launch guide covers the details.
Rather have someone dig for you?
We're building free launch maps for the first 10 indie builders: the subreddits and threads where your users already talk, and first posts written in your words.
